The Annual Field Day will take place at Caverton Mill Farm, Morebattle, near Kelso, TD5 8EE by kind permission of Neil and Keith Thomson on 8 June 2016. The programme will commence promptly at 10.30 am (coffee and bacon rolls from 10.00 am) and finish at 3.45 pm approximately.
The Farm is on Roxburghe Estates. Neil and Keith Thomson and their father are joint tenants of the Farm in terms of a 1991 Act tenancy. The family have tenanted the Farm for three generations. In proximity to the Farm the Thomson family own another 250 acres of land and farm another 700 acres of land on a contract arrangement. The farming business includes 170 commercial cows, bed and breakfast pigs, cereal growing, potato growing and storage and growing of cauliflower and broccoli which is uplifted from the Farm for freezing and packing throughout the season.
During the morning there will be an opportunity to inspect the Farm in proximity to the steading and see some of the buildings, livestock, crop and machinery. Neil and Keith Thomson will also explain their farming system during the inspection.
In connection with the growing of cauliflower and broccoli on the Farm there are 24 seasonal foreign workers. There will be a presentation relative to practical and legal issues connected with the employment of seasonal foreign workers. The afternoon will be spent in group discussion on valuation topics relative to (a) growing crop (b) livestock (c) resumption of a cottage and (d) tenant’s improvements.
Attendance at the Annual Field Day qualifies as a half day tutorial (3.5 hours) for those preparing to sit the CAAV Exam. It also qualifies as 5 hours CPD. Guests are welcome to attend. Outdoor wear is recommended.
